What comes after God of War Ragnarök?
For a long time, speculation about an Egyptian God of War, an Atreus spin-off, or even a return to something closer to the original Greek saga occurred. But one of the most frequently heard rumors points in a very different direction: a possible God of War game centered around Faye.
Faye, Kratos’ deceased wife and Atreus’ mother, has always been one of the most important characters in the Norse saga, even though she is barely present physically. Her death is the emotional starting point of God of War 2018, and much of the story revolves around Kratos and Atreus trying to understand who she really was. By the end of the journey, we learn she was not just a mortal woman, but a Frost Giant with foresight, secrets, and a much bigger role in the fate of both her family and the realms. At base value, this sounds like a promising foundation to build stories upon.
Some rumors suggest the game may be more action-focused than the Norse entries, which has created mixed reactions among the fanbase. On one hand, God of War 2018 and Ragnarök were already action-packed. On the other hand, some players still miss the larger-scale boss battles and more aggressive combat rhythm of the original Greek trilogy.
Maybe, just maybe, this is not meant to be another slow, emotional father-and-son journey. Maybe it is a faster, more intense spin-off built around Faye’s fighting style, her Giant heritage, and a different kind of combat identity. Is it even possible that we could see the game closer to character-action titles like Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, or Ninja Gaiden? A very enticing speculation nonetheless.
One thing is certain. A Faye game will not sell everyone on concept alone. For many, God of War is Kratos. Removing him from the lead role is a risk, and making Faye playable would need to be justified.
Here is how this thing could work
First, if rumors about faster-paced combat are true, Santa Monica needs to show it. A long emotional trailer might not suffice otherwise. Secondly, they need to tell us why having a whole game around the character of Faye makes her exciting beyond her relationship to Kratos and Atreus, and why she deserves the spotlight. The tone must be right. Her connection to the Giants, with Tyr, her possible battles before meeting Kratos, and the choices and sacrifices that led to the events of the Norse saga could all give the game real weight, if handled well.
Still, with all this, the biggest challenge would be player expectations. The next major God of War should move forward, not backward. There is a need to know what happens after Ragnarök. Or a new Atreus journey, Kratos’ future, or a completely new mythology. A Faye prequel would feel less urgent to some because we simply know where her story ends. But if well executed, it could make the ending hit harder.
According to leaker NateTheHate, the game is currently planned for a reveal this year, with a possible release in the first half of 2027, assuming there are no delays.
For now, though, we’ll see if Sony really does reveal a Faye-led God of War game at the upcoming State of Play.
