Microsoft has now confirmed that its major reset across Xbox involves thousands of jobs being cut and several studios leaving the company’s direct control. Double Fine and Compulsion are becoming independent again, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are being sold to new owners. But Arkane Studios, the team working on Marvel’s Blade, appears to be in a different and more uncertain position.
Since or last article on this topic, new reports came in suggesting Arkane is now entering a process to review “strategic options.” That could mean several things. Microsoft could keep the studio and continue funding it. It could try to sell it. It could look for another partner to help finish the game. Or, in the worst-case scenario, the project could still be cancelled if the numbers no longer make sense.
On paper, Microsoft has said that no publicly announced first-party projects are being cancelled as part of these reductions. That should be good news for Blade. But the game has also reportedly been delayed, is running over budget, and now sits inside a studio whose future is being reviewed. That does not sound like a project sitting comfortably in a safe zone.
The Disney factor also plays a role. This is not just an Xbox IP. It is a licensed Marvel project, which means any major change around the game, the studio, or its future likely becomes more complicated. If Arkane is sold or restructured, Microsoft may need to work through what happens with the license, publishing rights, and development responsibilities.
It is true that keeping Blade alive may require exactly what Microsoft seems less willing to offer right now: more time, more patience, and more money. However, cancelling this game would make the Xbox reset feel less like a disciplined move and more like a retreat, and I think it’s unlikely they would get exposed like this. They need to show strength, not weakness.
I do believe in the scenarios in which Blade receives the support it needs and simply moves further into the future, or Arkane changes ownership/gains a co-development partner, but this game will still continue in some form.
