A new Resident Evil 1 Remake may be further away than some might have hoped, but the latest rumor suggests Capcom has not forgotten the game that started everything.

According to DuskGolem, the remake of the original Resident Evil reportedly started pre-production around August or September last year. The game is still believed to be very early, and may only enter full production after Resident Evil Veronica is completed.

We know Capcom is already planning the next major phase of its Resident Evil remake strategy. Returning to the original RE was always a question of when. This game could become a major reset point for the franchise’s remake timeline. By adding more depth to the story, it could connect the events more directly to the later games, and it would bring Chris, Jill, Wesker, Barry, and Rebecca back to the center of the series in a way audiences have not seen before.

Thinking about what this remake could look like compared to the others does not give easy answers. The Spencer Mansion was renowned for its slower pace, the multitude of locked doors and puzzles, the heavy atmosphere, and its sense of isolation. A remake would need to lean heavily in that direction. Done badly, it could turn one of survival horror’s most atmospheric locations into something too familiar or too action-focused.

The first entry is, after all, one of the most important horror games ever made, and it already received one of the most respected remakes in gaming history all the way back in 2002, which still holds up to this day.

If Capcom is indeed preparing for another version, it has a lot to live up to.
